Romanji is the practice of transliterating Japanese words using the western (Roman) alphabet.

Details

Japanese words are typically written using kana (hiragana and katakana) and kanji. Because these scripts are difficult for non-Japanese to recognize and pronounce, Japanese is often written phonetically using the roman alphabet. While this is imprecise and occasionally causes confusion, it makes the Japanese language much more approachable to foreigners. Additionally, all Japanese since World War II have been taught to read and write romanji. This has proven more useful recently because romanji is the most common way to input text into computers.
