Obi

The obi (帯) is the belt of your karate uniform (gi). In Isshinryu, the color of the obi (and stripe, if any) signifies rank.

- Dan ranks from Sho Dan (first degree) to Yon Dan (fourth degree) all wear black obi with the color of the gi top and bottoms denoting rank.
- Go dan (fifth degree) through Hachi Dan (eighth degree) wear paneled obi of black and red or red and white
- Shihan, or Masters (Ku and Ju Dan - ninth and tenth degree) wear solid red obi
