The obi (帯) is the belt of your karate uniform (gi). In Isshinryu, the color of the obi (and stripe, if any) signifies rank.

Go Kyu Fifth Rank Yellow
Yon Kyu Fourth Rank Green
San Kyu Third Rank Brown
Ni Kyu Second Rank Brown w/ white tag
Ik Kyu First Rank Brown w/ black tag
  • Dan ranks from Sho Dan (first degree) to Yon Dan (fourth degree) all wear black obi with the color of the gi top and bottoms denoting rank.
  • Go dan (fifth degree) through Hachi Dan (eighth degree) wear paneled obi of black and red or red and white
  • Shihan, or Masters (Ku and Ju Dan - ninth and tenth degree) wear solid red obi
